Finnish Economy: on the Way of a Smart Giant

With half a day of economic topic is obviously not enough. The lecture is too short to handle all of our discussions. But fortunately, economy is ubiquitous all day just all the time such as the present moment when I am in the train to Kitee where my host family lives, big forest standing on the both sides of the railway---it is the dominant economic industry in Finland several decades ago and even nowadays.

I read the book a "portrait of Finland" where there is always a question: what is the next Nokia? Yes, it is quite reasonable to concern such a question especially during the economy crisis period.

Finland must have met the similar questions before: what is the next dominant industry after the forestry? Every country should be challenged by those questions and Finland has already got some preparation for the future prosperity.

There seems to be a bit boring playing with economic data. But I should say the lecture about Finnish economy is informative and conducive to my understanding of the future economic tendency despite the fact that my country is totally different from Finland in every way like territory, population, level of development and technology investment. (I should say I've been disappointed by the statistics of R&D investment in the total GDP which shows that China is ranked the second to last in the list, but it is true…sigh.)

How about Finnish economy nowadays? It is on the way of a smart giant: strong brain in a mini-body. What is the next step after Nokia's success? Or the question can be: Has Finland prepared well for the future attractive products it can export/introduce to the rest of the world?

Low-carbon technology is frequently mentioned here. Today I saw some pieces of the idea of the technology today when we took the tour around Neste Oil Refinery area. But I am still wondering whether the low-carbon and carbon storage technology can be promoted economically because of its large investment and perhaps relatively small profit. I once participated in an academic forum about Carbon Capture and Storage technology from British Consulate-general in Shanghai. I was told that the updated and advanced technology will take one or two decades to decrease its cost.

Another answer could be water treatment industry. I saw from the pamphlet which entitles water as the "future oil". But relying on the clean water resource (though the Baltic Sea is polluted), it seems to be not economically efficient to transport the clean water products outside Finland.

But I'm fully convinced that the Finnish smart giant will find its way to get through those challenges. There is some positive information from China. Though China is not a big partner of Finland, some actions have been taken in the cooperative projects in China. I've been to such half-official organizations as FinChi, Tekes and FECC in Shanghai where they help many small Finnish companies to find their Chinese market and partners. Recently the number of projects and investments are increasing. (It is also reported that a China Innovation Centre will be established in Helsinki in the near future.) I was surprised by this state public service because it shows some ambitions of Finland in the future prosperous market. I think it should be a feasible way to explore new market possibilities apart from Nokia.

Simplified But Not Simple

Young Journalists' blog (FCP 2009)

I stayed with my host family last weekend in Kitee where their summer cottages are. We had some nice talks about our own countries, cultures, languages and media. We shifted our topic to design, very naturally, and there happened some interesting things.

Anu, my 42-year-old host mother (Apparently she is too young to be my mother, but anyway, she took care of me a lot.) and her 13-year-old daughter, Taru had totally different opinions about domestic decoration. Reading a design magazine together, Anu prefers traditional European patterns and delicate accessories on the furniture and on the wall while Taru hates those decorations very much. Obviously she likes simplified straight lines with black and white contrast combination, which are also my favorite.

It is a typical fight between two generations. It is also a vivid picture about the difference between tradition and modern concepts---not only in interior design but also in urban planning. During my stay in Helsinki, the most competitive World Design Capital candidate, I realize that design is everything everywhere, with more and more modern ideology fulfilling the city.

"To design a city means you should care about how people feel about." said by the person who is in charge of World Design Capital program in Helsinki City Hall, "design is for humans, it is not useless." Function-oriented design is one of the main characteristics in Finland and perhaps other Nordic countries. I should say I really like it. From the perspective of post modernity, it is a tendency to simplified and human-friendly life style.

But the superficial understanding of design is far from perfect. Why simplified? Why environmental-friendly? Why people-oriented?

Think about those two-side wood folding chairs we saw today in Creadesign. There is no useless component at all. Each part of wood has its own function. It is the people who seat on it make it valuable; it is not the chair that adds value on the people. There is a big step forward from the old European fashion to modernity: simplify appearance and accessories but enrich interiors.

That is what I appreciate in design spirit. Elderly people always want to use colorful cloths to balance with their age while youngsters prefer to black and white because they have much more passion inside. (It is a common phenomenon; no offense to older generation…Believe me.) It is the same principle which can be applied to Finnish design spirit.

Last but not least, Simplified but not simple design has a very smooth system of marketing strategy, which should be learned by many developing countries where there are many good stuff lacking promotion methods.

(Thank God that I've well prepared for my oversleeping!),于是以迅雷不及掩耳盗铃之速度在15分钟内赶到,花掉我近20EU大洋,不过让我在舱门关闭前2分钟上了船,遇到了全组人,还是很值得的。

在他们可爱的summer cottage(芬兰人大部分都有自己常住的城市里的房子,还同时有供夏天住的度假小别墅)里,我遇到了家里的爸爸Harri。
